How it's made:
I hammer copper into a bowl shape, forming details like the bottom and edges with specialized steel stakes and hammers. Then I fuse powdered glass to both sides of the bowl, building up thin layers and firing each in a 1500 degree kiln.
I draw the image by hand, freestyle, directly on the bowl on a base coat of white glass using graphite and special enamel pencils and paint. The final steps are fusing clear layers of glass over the drawing, ensuring the one of a kind image is embedded in the bowl.
Inspiration:
The thistle flower is prickly and aggressive in its unique form of beauty. Called the herb of witches, it has many medicinal and nutritional benefits - once even considered a remedy for the plague (hear that pfizer and moderna?!)
It has had both positive and negative connotations; with Victorian times using it as a symbol to warn against meddling, and Celtics as a symbol of bravery and determination. Overall it is a wonderful totem to represent overcoming adversity.
Rainbows and wildflowers = love and equality meet curious beauty. When the grey becomes oppressive, a spark of color gives hope.
